RFID technology is widely embraced by different industries nowadays due to the operational efficiency and inventory accuracy it brings. In fact, yard management is even made easier, faster and cost-effective with the implementation of RFID technology.

Barcode and manual systems of inventory proves to be less efficient and accurate during the process of inventory in outdoor yards. Though manual and barcode systems are still in use today, many yard operators have integrated the use of RFID Readers, antenna and RFID tags in its operation to reduce errors and inefficiency. Barcode system only works best with minimal amount of data to process but tracking large volumes of equipment and machinery that are constantly used in and out of the yard can be a tedious and laborious task to accomplish.

With the coming of RFID technology into the market, barcode and manual systems of conducting inventory are abolished by some large yard operators and managers. The use of RFID Tags on each equipment and machinery in yards proves to be effective in tracking the availability of equipment on the shelf, in determining the status of each machinery, how often it is used and to whom and where should each item be delivered.

RFID also facilitates in the real-time tracking of equipment with utmost accuracy. This allows organizations to determine the productivity of each item acquired. This way, companies are able to maximize their utilization of each asset. More often than not, underutilized assets causes opportunity cost to the operator’s end. Furthermore, failure to conduct inventory can negatively affect the level of customer satisfaction due to delay and increased waiting time.

Many companies mount RFID antenna within the working facility to monitor the check-in and check-out of equipment in the vicinity through RFID tags attached to each item. This reduces the incidence of theft or robbery of critical assets and equipment. RFID also helps in the rapid identification of the location of missing apparatus, equipment and machinery. This prevents companies from incurring additional costs on purchasing new equipment or in replacing consigned and rented machinery.
